About St George’s Crypt

St George’s Crypt is a Christian charity based underneath the thriving church of St George’s, in central Leeds. It has been providing care and support for homeless, vulnerable and disadvantaged people since 1930. Don Robins first opened the doors of the Crypt to alleviate the considerable distress of many who found themselves with next to nothing as a result of the Great Depression. The Crypt enjoys excellent relations with all Christian denominations and welcomes people of every faith. Today, the Crypt continues to provide unconditional support to all those who come to its door.

Many of the people who come to St George’s Crypt lead a rootless and chaotic lifestyle. Not only does the Crypt provide food and a bed, it gives clients a reason to get out of bed too. Its training and engagement programme, together with volunteering opportunities, focus on positive changes to help break the cycle of being homeless and unemployable. The charity empowers people by helping them to rediscover forgotten skills and identify new ones. It helps to increase self-confidence, self-esteem and the willingness to learn. Most of all, it helps homeless people realise that they do have a place in our society.
